Marathon basketball teams raise money for 8th grader battling leukemia - WAOW

Friday nights double header at Marathon High School wasn't just a pair of basketball games. It was an opportunity to benefit a young girl, who also has a love for the game.

"I'm a point guard," Madisyn Lang said. She started basketball when she was in 5th grade.

Now that Madisyn is in 8th grade, she's not only battling for rebounds, but she's battling leukemia.

"On June 24, we had taken Madisyn to the doctor," said LeAnn Lang, Madisyn's mom. "She had not been feeling good. She was really tired, so we took her in for some lab work. A couple hours later, we got a phone call back saying we need to get to Marshfield. They were waiting for us and told us to pack for a week. The next morning, we got diagnosis confirmed that we had leukemia to beat. So, we as a family sat down and said can't change it, so let's beat it. That's all we can do."

She's not alone though. Both Marathon and Prentice's high school basketball teams made Friday night's games all about Madisyn.

"Coach Snyder called and asked if we could do something for Madisyn," LeAnn said. "Madi loves basketball. She plays at St. Mary's. She loves it. We love the sport. They asked if they could do something for her and, right away, we said yes. This is what she loves. We didn't expect this. This is crazy."

"Our coaches have put in a ton of time and effort," said Curt Miller, Marathon High School's Athletic Director. "They reached out to the opposing team and Prentice came down and are bringing the family a check."

Between shirt sales, a 50/50 raffle and the donation from Prentice, over $2,000 was raised for the Lang family.

"To see all the blue here and all the orange support, it's overwhelming," LeAnn said. "It feels really good to a part of a community like this."

"It's not about the wins and losses in an event like this," Miller said. "It's more about let's come together for a cause and support a child that's going through some difficult times and support the family. What a neat thing to see. It's another example of what athletics can bring out: the great in everybody."
