The Essar Four Villages Half Marathon has maintained a huge popularity in the course of its 36 years. The main challenge you’ll face in this race is the weather, as the unpredictable mid-winter conditions could make for a cold experience. The race takes place on closed roads to ensure that the weather is less of a factor, and there are hot drinks at the finish line to help warm you up. The race is popular with runners training for a spring marathon as well as for its support from the local community, so you can expect to be cheered up the hills by children with cowbells. The post-race t-shirts even have artwork designed by local school children.
What do the racers say?
Hannah C: I have ran this half marathon the past 3 years, it is now a staple race in my calendar and I look forward to the race every year! Well organised, such an amazing and challenging course and definitely gave me the bug for racing.
Steve R: A club organised event that delivers a great atmosphere and raises funds for local charities and good causes
Rees M: Lovely little town with a scenic race. Wasn’t a congested start and the snow held off. Will book again for next year.
On their success at The Challenge Awards, Helsby Running Club said: “A big thank you to everyone who voted and we are looking forward to welcoming lots of Runners World readers to our next race which takes place on 19th January 2020.”
With a downhill finish, you’ll be sprinting towards glory in this scenic and welcoming event.
And the runners up:
2nd Place: Leamington Spa Half Marathon - By Raceways
This route has a great mix between rural and urban. The start and finish passes through the heart of Royal Leamington Spa, but also takes in local picturesque villages. Towards the end of the race, the route takes racers on a tour of the historical Royal Pump Room Gardens. There’s a hero’s welcome for all finishers and a party atmosphere, or tired athletes can even benefit from a massage.
3rd Place: Run Tatton Half Marathon & 10k - By RunThrough
Compared to the grand-scale city half marathons, this is a welcome lowkey event, which still manages to attract 2000 participants. With only a few slight undulations, this is a great course to set a half-marathon PB. Even if speed isn’t your focus, the stunning surroundings, including a deer park, will make this race well worth your while.
