On Sunday 8 December, Marcus Green set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time pushing a wheelchair round a marathon at the RunThrough Running GP event, held at Goodwood Motor Circuit.
Green was pushing Phil Rossall, a former teacher from Orpington who has motor neurone disease. According to news reports, keen runner Rossall was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2016, and was only given a couple of years to live. Since then, he has raised £28,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
On Sunday, Green pushed Rossall over the line in an incredible time of 02:57:40, breaking the three hour mark and beating the previous world record for pushing a wheelchair around a marathon - 03:01:24. The RunThrough event at Goodwood Motor Circuit is a popular race, with 5K laps making up the fast, flat course.
Back in February, Green pushed Rossall in the Worthing Half Marathon, breaking the Guinness World Record for the fastest half-marathon wheelchair push, crossing the line in 1:29:38. Green now holds the World Records for both the fastest half marathon and marathon time while pushing a wheelchair.
The duo were joined by friends David Mills and Guy James, who each ran a half marathon carrying a spare breathing ventilator for Rossall in a backpack. Rossall is totally reliant on the ventilator, and has lost the use of his muscles.
Serious kudos to all involved!
