LAS CRUCES - A new half marathon event ran through Las Cruces with plans of becoming a full marathon in 2021.

Visit Las Cruces, with Athletics Race Management, launched the "Las Cruces Half" on Saturday with races including a half marathon, 5k and one mile starting and ending at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces.

The half marathon race, which has been largely absent from Las Cruces in recent years, is a stepping stone for a full marathon in 2021, according to organizers.

“We’re starting off the new year with those who hopefully want to take their fitness seriously and who come out and start the year out on a good foot, running a new race,” said Scott Fister, one of the organizers of the event for Athletics Race Management. “This is our kickoff race for the 2021 marathon next year on the same weekend.”

Ed Carnathan, with Visit Las Cruces, said this event has the potential to bring in more people from outside Las Cruces, generating more tourism in the area.

“It’s important to start this race as we’re trying to generate events that are going to bring in people from outside the area,” Carnathan said. “We’re going to build this event to something down the line where we’ll have a thousand (people) or so within five years.”

Carnathan said, due to the weather in Las Cruces, the city is able to have more running events throughout the year than other colder weather areas like Albuquerque.

“We have great weather here in Las Cruces. It’s easy for us to put on a running event,” Carnathan said. “365 days a year we’re outside playing.”

Brandon Joe took first place in the half marathon with a time of one hour and 27 minutes, finishing ahead of 26 other participants.
