The best (and worst) marathons in the world, according to new study - Runner's World (UK)

While running the London Marathon might be on the top of most runners’ marathon wishlists, according to recent data collected by The Sole Supplier, London is only number 11 on a list of the best marathons in the world.

Looking at course data, The Sole Supplier analysed average finish times, medical stations, toilets, entry fees and how good local accommodation was, as well as environmental factors, such as air quality, temperature, rainfall and altitude. They then collated data to give each of the 81 marathons on the list a score out of ten, naming the best and worst marathons in the world.

The best marathons in the world

Germany’s Haspa Marathon Hamburg took the top spot, scoring 7.57 out of 10 thanks to its low entry fee (€66) and favourable altitude (8m above sea level). It also has 42 toilet stations along the course and an average temperature of 12.3°C.

In second place is the International Vienna City Marathon, with a score of 7.45 out of 10. Scoring 10/10 for its toilet facilities (there’s 43 along the 26.2 mile course), the weather also gets 8.32/10, as there’s very little chance you’ll get rained on. Vienna is the fifth-fastest marathon in the world, with an average finish time of 4:00:01.

Cracovia Marathon in Poland, the Danske Bank Vilnius Marathon in Lithuania and Wizz Air Cluj Marathon in Romania complete the list of the top five. The Virgin Money London Marathon was number 11, with a score of 6.54 and the Greater Manchester Marathon was 18th, scoring 6.22.

The worst marathons in the world

When it comes to the worst marathons surveyed, the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon got the worst score of 3.69 due to the city’s air pollution levels, hot climate, slow average finish time and lack of medical aid along the course. Marathons in Delhi, Singapore, Nairobi and Ho Chi Minh City also received low scores.

The fastest and slowest marathons in the world

The fastest marathon on the list was the H C Andersen Marathon in Odense, with an average finish time of 3:51:22, followed by the Swiss City Marathon in Lucerne, with an average of 3:51:33. The AG Antwerpen Marathon (3:52:12), Kleine Zeitung Graz Marathon (3:54:13) and the International Vienna City Marathon (4:00:01) make up the rest of the top five. According to the data, all these marathons have clean air, mild temperatures and low altitudes in common.

According to researchers, Asia is where you will find the world’s slowest marathons. The Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon is slowest of them all, with an average finish time of 5:41:47. The BDMS Bangkok Marathon in Thailand (5:21:18), Angkor Empire Marathon in Cambodia (5:13:28) and Skechers Performance Chennai Marathon in India (5:11:27) were also in the top five.

The marathons with the least air pollution

The marathon with the cleanest, safest air was the HC Anderson Marathon in Denmark with an air pollution score of 2, followed by the EMF Edinburgh Marathon festival with a score of 5. The Greater Manchester Marathon was 8th, with an air pollution score of 11 and the Virgin Money London Marathon was 10th, with an air pollution score of 14. Last in the rankings was the IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon in India, which has an air pollution score of 152.

The safest marathons in the world

In order to find the safest marathon in the world, researchers looked at the number of medical stations along the course. The winner was the Danske Bank Vilnius Marathon in Lithuania, which had 84 medical stations. The Volkswagen Prague Marathon was in second place, with 35 medical stations en route. When it comes to the marathon majors, the TCS New York City Marathon was crowned the safest of the five races, with 25 medical stations on course, followed by The Bank of America Chicago Marathon, which has 21. At the bottom of this list was three marathons with just one recorded medical station - the Logicom Cyprus Marathon, Calgary Marathon and Plovdiv Marathon.

Of course, this is just one study and many runners will disagree with the findings, but the survey does pose interesting questions on the impact of air pollution at marathons. To find out more and see how all 81 marathons in the study performed, find the complete list here.
