The 2019 Humana Rock ’n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon and half-marathon will accomplish what Mayor Ron Nirenberg could not: curtailing car traffic on the lower stretch of Broadway.
The mayor and members of the cyclist community have fought for protected bike lanes on Broadway inside Interstate 35, without success. On Sunday, the southbound lane of the central corridor — and more than 60 other roads in San Antonio — will be closed to both cars and cyclists.
In their place, thousands of runners representing all 50 states and 27 different countries will pound San Antonio's pavement during the city's popular annual marathon.
Downtown road closures will be in effect for the 5k and 10k races on Saturday morning as well as the half marathon and marathon on Sunday. Most roads will begin closing at 6 a.m. both days and lift hours later when the race finishes. Parking and highway ramps will also be affected. Saturday's races begin at 7:30 a.m. with the start times on Sunday set for 7:15 a.m.

Of course, the road closures aren't the only impact: the marathon will bring approximately $12 million to the city's hotels, restaurants, and stores over the weekend, according to race director Todd Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald, in his second year as race director, said the organizers strive to map a course that will minimize the event's effect on the city. This year's 26.2-mile route resembles the state of Massachusetts — if a Texas politician steeped in the art of gerrymandering decided to carve out a sliver of Vermont.
Both the half and full marathons begin on West Market Street by the River Walk, run roughly parallel to Broadway as far north as Brackenridge Park, then return downtown. The half marathon concludes at Hemisfair, while the 26.2-mile race takes a scenic loop through Jefferson Heights and the South Side before reaching the same destination.
Fitzgerald noted Rock 'n' Roll wanted to "showcase and highlight the city of San Antonio" — including Salado Creek and the Greenway trails.

The race director worked in close collaboration with the city and community partners to bring the race to fruition for the 12th time. Of planning an event of this magnitude in a major city, Fitzgerald said, "It's awesome. It's everything. It's humbling."
The festivities kick off Friday with a health and fitness expo at the Convention Center. Country singer and San Antonio native Mike Ryan will close the curtain with a concert following the awards ceremony at Hemisfair at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.
Weather conditions should be near perfect. Forecasts call for sunny skies on both days, with a high of 67 on Saturday and 76 on Sunday.
